Whats the Deal with Carbs?

Have you ever heard the terms "good carbs" and "bad carbs?" Given all the fad diets out there you may wonder if any carbs are alright to eat.

In fact, carbohydrates are a main source of energy for the body. They turn into sugar for energy-- some more starchy and sugary carbs give us fast bursts of energy that are gone in 30-90 minutes, and other carbs (the higher fiber whole and ancient grains) give us a more controlled energy source that often lasts 4-5 hours or until the next meal.

Oftentimes, though, we eat more carbs at a time than we need, the excess your body simply converts to storage forms of energy- ie. fat. This is why carbs can be dangerous and frequently misconstrued as fattening. If you don't overdo it when you eat, then you'd be golden.

What types of carbs don't really provide a benefit? That would be the processed ones, or ones that are primarily starch or sugar with very little fiber (most cereals, white rice, pasta, and white bread are here, but the list is very long). Often they're masked by loads of added vitamins and minerals or labeling techniques like organic, gluten free, cholesterol free, kosher, low fat, non-gmo, etc. Don't be tricked by cool labels. If it comes in a box or a bag, be cautious!

Talk to me to get a consultation on what types of carbs are best for you, how you should balance them, and at what times are best to consume them.

Take home message:

Eat carbs often. The high fiber, natural ones. Keep the portions small and consistent. For some healthy carb options, try some protein pasta or beans for your carb-steady side.
